The Little Black Dress

Every woman needs a little black dress in their wardrobe. For me, it’s a staple that will look sophisticated and make you feel put together no matter what. My staple little black dress is a basic one from J. Crew and it’s my go-to LBD for work. (See below for many LBD options.)

LBDs can come in many styles. My favourite for work is the sheath dress. It’s both figure-complimenting and completely work-appropriate. (This is the same reason I love the pencil skirt the most. Last seen here.)Β

To some, this dress may be a little short in length – I would prefer if it was more around my knee area – so you could pair with tights to stay conservative πŸ™‚

While I love my arms to feel free, I do like the sleeves on this dress. They’re long enough to hide some bat wing action but short enough to be breathable.

I own two more little black dresses – a sleeveless, flirty, flare with a back cutout and an off-the shoulder cocktail dress. And honestly, I’m still trying to get more.

Maybe it’s the curse of being a woman, but one type of clothing in a certain colour is not enough. We can be in so many moods and just the one LBD in your wardrobe isn’t enough to suit all of them πŸ˜‰

*Just remember that, as you search for a variety of staple pieces, that you consider the versatility and timelessness of it in your wardrobe.

Some LBDs I have been eyeing areΒ this day-to-night cocktail dress and this strappy number.

Thanks to Mary Orton from Memorandum for these. She’s my new favourite blogger due to her classic and sophisticated style – a wardrobe I’m trying to achieve.

I decided I wanted to shoot such a classic dress in a classic location and where better than Mackenzie Hall Cultural Centre. This place is located in one of the most historic areas in Windsor (Sandwich) and is the venue where I took my piano exams back in the day. I still remember the tall, majesticΒ room πŸ™‚

The grand piano (or maybe it was a baby grand – it was all big to me back then) was set up in the middle of the room and you had to play pieces memorized, sight-read new pieces, and play endless scales. I remember my family sitting outside while I did my examination. “Did you hear me?” I’d say.

Given the warm tones of the location, I stuck to neutrals (who am I kidding – I already do that anyway) so I finished the look off with this two-tone bag (last seen here – SOLD OUT) and nude heels (last seen here).

What’s your favourite little black dress in your wardrobe? Do you also feel like you need multiple?
