Eyelash Extensions 101

Dress Up, Chow Down - Eyelash Extensions 101

I don’t think an itty bitty eyelash committee exists but I think it should – because I’m a part of it. No matter what I do to my eyelashes – curl, mascara, whatever – they won’t stand out anymore than they do au naturelle. So what’s a girl to do? Either falsies or eyelash extensions. Guess which one I picked? 🙂

Before choosing eyelash extensions as my eyelash enhancement of choice, I did consider falsies. How could I not? You see them around so much. But, the idea of using falsies bothered me.

The precision needed to put on your falsies correctly? Nah, b. I don’t want to mess with that. Plus, you have to put them on every time you want to glam it up and THEN you have to take them off.

No, thanks. Too inconvenient for me. 👿

So, I chose eyelash extensions instead. And, of course, I did the research. I wanted to know what was going to happen to me. But, the thing that appealed to me the most was that you wouldn’t have to worry about your eyes looking “done” everyday you had them. They would just be done!

Sweet. Convenient. Lazy? Debatable 😉

*The Discreet package is pictured in this post.

To date, I have gotten eyelash extensions a total of 4 times – including for this post. So, I’ve got some experience under my belt 😉 For this post, I wanted to show a package I loved while also showing a package that would demonstrate the difference eyelash extensions can make while also being at a reasonable price.

Three out of the four times I’ve gotten my lashes done, I’ve purchased the Discreet package. It takes 1.5 hours and provides light eye coverage. This was the first package I ever chose and I chose it because I wanted a subtle glam to my eyes. I wanted the eyelash extensions to pass for natural while adding a little magic.

Once, I ventured outside of my Discreet package to up the ante with the Vavaboom lashes. These babies took about 2 hours to put on and the results were even more glorious. The only downside to these ones for me were that they basically took forever to put on and the fumes from the glue got to me.

For the future, I’d only go with the Vavaboom for really special events. I’m hoping to get them done for Paris! 🙂

Both the Discreet and the Vavaboom lashes lasted me about a month before looking sub-par again.

How long they’ll last varies. Because the lashes are attached to each individual lash, it will fall off depending on your lash cycle or if you rub them aggressively. Control your hands, ladies!

While not all beauty enhancements are for everyone, you may be one of my readers interested in trying eyelash extensions out. I took to Twitter to gather your concerns for this post and I’ve asked Nayeli, owner of BLINC Beauty Lounge – and wonderful #BOSS lady extraordinaire – to answer your questions!

Meet Nayeli Castellanos – owner of BLINC Beauty Lounge. Also, singer.

How did you come to start BLINC Beauty Lounge?

After being in the beauty industry for over 16 years, and in the eyelash extension business for 4 years from an in-home location, I wanted to create a beauty oasis where all women could come and get the best semi-permanent services in a relaxed yet luxe surrounding! 🙂

I came across this opportunity when looking for my locale and came across Dry Parlour in Tecumseh, Ontario. It was the perfect spot available to establish BLINC Beauty Lounge. Here we are today!

What are common misconceptions regarding eyelash extensions?

A lot of ladies think they will damage their natural lashes. Some even believe that they will wash off after they shower.

Will eyelash extensions ruin your eyelashes?

Like any other beauty service, the professional who performs the service, the expertise and the quality of products will dictate the outcome of the beauty enhancement service and results.

I believe in a “holistic” approach to eyelash extensions meaning that our main objective is to provide an enhancement that doesn’t compromise the health of our client – or their lashes. We want them to reap great beauty benefits for as long as they like 🙂

As a consequence of ensuring our clients don’t have any damage done to their lashes, over 80% of our clients keep their lash extensions and come to see us for as long as they see fit!

I’m happy to say that we have clients that have – and are still – loyal to us from the time I began my eyelash extensions career.

What material are your eyelash extensions made of?

Our eyelash extensions are made of silk and are extremely comfortable. Though they do just as much as heels to our legs, they’re often mistaken for being natural rather than looking like eyelash extensions! 😛

Can the process hurt? If so, why?

There is no pain involved in the eyelash extension process here at BLINC Beauty Lounge.

How long will they last for? Do you have any tips for making them last longer?

BLINC eyelash extensions can last indefinitely as long as they are properly cared for and maintained. This includes regular refills ranging from every 2-4 weeks from initial consultation. Proper cleansing and care is also crucial in their longevity.

Using makeup sponges and disposable lash mascara wands to remove eye shadow and eye liner from lids and lashes with BLINC’s recommended non-oily eye makeup remover is a guaranteed way to ensure your lashes can last.

Last but not least, I highly recommend that lash users stay away from oil free products to ensure your lashes will last for a long time.

Can I use mascara with my eyelash extensions?

You can and may use mascara so long as it’s removed appropriately using the one recommended by BLINC.

(Although most of our eyelash extension clients opt for no mascara. LIVING.) 😀

For those that don’t keep up with eyelash extension refills and don’t use the recommended eyelash extension mascara, I’d advise you to use non-waterproof mascaras because waterproof mascaras can attach to extensions and weigh them down. The waterproof mascara removers can also dissolve the eyelash extension adhesives and shorten their longevity and take away from your optimal look.

Tips on removing makeup around the extensions?

Use our recommended eyelash extension eye makeup remover. Apply on a foundation sponge or  on a disposable mascara wand. This is the easiest and most effective way to clean on and around eyelash extensions.

Compare and contrast the pros and cons of false eyelashes and eyelash extensions.

Eyelash extensions are attached to individual eyelashes – one at a time. They’re super lightweight, natural-looking and feeling! 🙂

Lash strips, on the other hand, are attached to the lash line. It’s day-wear only and they’re more heavy as well as less naturally looking. Fake eyelashes are just not as comfortable and heavier on the eyes.

If you could give only one bit of advice to a first-timer, what would you say?

Do your homework on who you will choose as a professional. Make sure they have a great reputation and talk to people who have used their services or are ongoing clients of theirs. This will help you determine if you’ll be happy with the service.

When you arrive, make sure you come with no eye makeup. Be ready to lie down for at least 1.5-2h+ depending on the density and look you’re going for.

Also remember you that you won’t be able to wet your lashes for a minimum of 24h post-application.

What is your favourite part about your profession?

My favourite part about my profession is the amazing ladies I get to meet. I love providing them a service that, not only saves them time and energy from their daily beauty routine but, gives them a great opportunity to chat or rest. It’s good to break away from your busy life now and again.

It’s also great to connect with a wide range of dynamic ladies. Mothers, professionals, full-time workers, grandmothers, retirees, and students – just to name a few. All of these diverse ladies love the benefits of our eyelash extensions.

In the end, I love seeing how we have all more in common than we think 🙂

How do you balance your career with being a single mom?

My son is my driving force. I aim to make every second count with my son as well as both the business and social areas of my life. Defining and sticking to systems as well as learning to delegate has been instrumental in me being able to juggle all of this. But, it’s a work in progress. Demands grow but that’s part of any career as a woman today.

Another thing that has also helped me is talking and sharing with other ladies who are in similar positions. It helps me get insight on how to improve and gain the strength to keep going. I’m grateful for this!

What is your philosophy on beauty?

It’s truly as they say – it starts from within. Keep it simple and have fun being the best possible version of you! We all add a piece to this masterpiece called life so let the best version of who you are shine!

Do what makes you feel your best. Start from within and use aesthetics as the final touch 😉 Whatever you do – own it. If it’s lashes, I hope that everyone that comes through BLINC gets more than just a lash opening experience. I want them to experience the bundle of benefits special only to that person.

To me that is victory.
