I can’t help but trip out when wedding season rolls around. I always feel like I have to buy something new when it’s a special occasion. Without fail, I felt the familiar waves of fashion anxiety hit me once I realized that I was going to my cousin’s wedding surrounded by a bunch of stylish French people. Yikes.
In my frenzy, I almost bought a dress – or two – that wasn’t for me – simply because I felt like I needed to buy something new and different. This Calvin Klein floral dress was one of the ones I let go – even though my photographer tried hard to convince me to keep it and it was a dress I could have shot.
The lesson here is this: Stay true to yourself. Even if you are the only one that thinks so. Trust your gut so you don’t end up with something you’ll only wear once. Long-term versatility is so important! 🙂
Well, great. I avoided a bad purchase. But there was still a problem to tackle. What was I going to wear?
A Wedding: Playing It Safe
Sometimes we forget that something tried and true can save the day. Once, I was relieved of the unnecessary pressures to buy something new and different, I realized I had a wonderful black sheath.
Sharing 3 QUICK TIPS when you’re considering going with an LBD FOR ANY WEDDING:
- If there’s a church portion to the wedding, consider an LBD that covers your shoulders. There’s something about bare shoulders – even in the summer – that’s a little risque. You could throw a light cardigan or shawl on during the day and bare your shoulders in the evening while you dance.
- When in doubt, choose a conservative length. For my height, that’s usually slightly above the knees. I like that a sheath is automatically a conservative length because they are usually seen as the go-to dress for the workplace. The sheath is actually my favourite dress! Last seen here.
- If your LBD is simple, consider going with a statement bag or shoe. I chose to go with this Juicy Couture statement studded box clutch while balancing the rest of the look with a simple, sleek watch from Bulova and classic black heels with beautiful gold details on the back.

Impulse buys are hard to avoid – especially when it comes to special occasions. Take the time to think about what’s practical in the long-run when you’re shopping – whether it’s for a special occasion or not – and take measures to avoid bad buys. Personally, I like to poll my best girlfriends and sisters before I buy. Not because I need them to decide for me, but to test how I feel against a stack of differing opinions 😉
