Happy 4th of July to my US readers! It’s actually Canada Day weekend for me and I spent it at Mexicantown with my boyfriend and his parents. While Mexican food isn’t my cuisine of choice, I had a great time with them. Mike’s parents even got a Margarita Jug. Ole! Made me miss New Orlean’s daiquiris…
Today, I want to share something special with you 🙂
When I was in Paris at the end of May, I booked a shoot with one of my favourite Instagram photographers, Olivier Wong. Maybe you’ve heard of him? He takes beautiful pictures of architecture using his signature style of reflection and light. Check out his Instagram here.
Paris is grand and elegant and I wanted to wear a statement dress to convey that. Here are some things to consider when shopping for a statement dress. I’ve also provided options for statement dresses that you can save on with the 4th of July Sales. Make sure to check them out before they expire!
When picking a statement dress colour, think of the colours that you feel good in as well as the colours that look great with your skin-tone. Use this article by Who What Wear as a guide. Personally, I go with the colour that helps me feel good and then use my eyes to decide whether it looks right with my skin tone 😉
While this statement dress from Banana Republic doesn’t get it’s statement from colour, I like that it is a combination of two neutral colours – navy and white – and skews more white than navy for its overall colour. For a really special event, like a gala, I like to opt for a bold red in a simple yet sophisticated and sexy silhouette. This midi dress from Anthropologie is a lovely statement colour for summer.
Normally, I’m much more comfortable with solids than I am with prints. Maybe you feel the same! So, if I’m opting for a print, I like to go with smaller prints that aren’t as loud or prints that are balanced by a simple silhouette and neutral colours. This one from Ann Taylor is similar to my dress 🙂
This dress makes a statement via its bold print and is balanced by neutral colours and a conservative cut. Some great statement print dresses include this lace shift dress and this floral dress from Kate Spade.
With the bold print, I like that this dress is balanced out with the conservative sheath silhouette. I think the added detail of the neckline is darling too 🙂 . You could also try this ruffle dress and this flare dress.

It was raining almost everyday that we were in Paris but Olivier made the best of it. He was also very kind to us when we got lost prior to arriving at the shoot location. I just knew that, rain or shine, I really wanted to shoot with Olivier because I’ve been following his work on Instagram for so long. Plus, I’m glad I could share a glimpse of what I do when I blog with Mike – even though he was super bored lmao 😉
