Before I got laid off, I worked in an office. An advertising agency’s office, to be exact. It was always cold. My co-worker and I would literally wear parkas in the summer. Dressing is hard when you work in an overly air-conditioned environment! So today, let’s talk about workwear – summer workwear, specifically 🙂
Even though I’m not working right now, I still think about building a wardrobe of workwear essentials. Since it’s still summer, I’ll be highlighting the perfect summertime workwear essentials for ladies who are constantly on-the-go from the sophisticated corporate office to casual, pant-popping lunch meetings! 😛
The Easy Blazer
Blazers are already a staple of the workplace. They add a sophisticated masculine edge to an ensemble so they are perfect for commanding respect at the office and upping the ante on an otherwise casual outfit. In the summer, opt for light fabrics like linen to keep you cool and polished 🙂
The blazer I’m wearing is made of tencel and polyester but I also love this linen one.
As for colour, I think white is a great choice for the summer. Navy and white are some of my favourite colour combinations. In the fall, switch to deeper colours and thick fabrics. J. Crew is a cult favourite of mine for workwear. Try a camel or striped blazer and always make sure it’s well made.
I like to go into the store and feel the fabric but if all else fails, return! 👿
The Leather Padfolio
If The Devil Wears Prada has taught us anything, it’s that you should always be ready. In the movie, ladies at the office had heels ready to switch into the moment their boss walked into the building 👿
For ladies popping in and out of the office for meetings, I’d recommend a padfolio for business essentials.
The padfolio is a slim, lightweight accessory to carry everything you need with you to a meeting, even if it’s over lunch. Just pop in your debit card, a pen, and a notepad. For extra brownie points, carry business cards and pop them in the card slots because you never know when you might need them for networking 🙂
I carry my life in my work bag. I’m serious – I carry a brush filled with hair that I’m too lazy to pull out! So I find it a lot easier to quickly prep a padfolio and grabbing it to-go then customizing my bag for a meeting – even though a structured bag or sophisticated tote is perfect for work otherwise.
Ever since I purged my closet of the things that didn’t meet my standards, I’ve been really obsessed with building a strong, long-lasting foundation of staples – workwear essentials included!
I’m thinking of doing a closet edit sometime soon. Inventorying the wardrobe I actually have, will wear, and enjoy wearing and then making a list of the essentials that I need. That way I can help you guys too 🙂
